African Leopard

March 6, 2016

This beautiful specimen (Panthera pardus pardus) often seen in our traversing area and was seen this past week. Although they are well distributed in the Greater Kruger they tend to be more nocturnal in their behaviour, quite shy and therefore more difficult to encounter during a safari. The adult males are much larger than the females and can weigh more than 50KG while the average female is generally about 30 KG.

The most fascinating fact about these stunning cats is how adaptable they are and they will eat anything from dung beetles, rodents, birds and ungulates as large as an Eland which can weigh 900KG.

They are territorial and are often in conflict with other Leopards, Lions and obviously, Humans.
