African Wild dog Pups

June 27, 2023

We are in the fortunate position to have a small Wild dog den on our traversing area. It is an exciting time for us all! Wild dog pups are some of the cutest little fluff balls you will ever find in nature. Even from an early age they are active, curiously exploring their surrounds and they are fascinating to watch.

Pups are born after a gestation period of about 69-73 days. They are born with their eyes open and can walk within a few days. The entire pack helps to care for the pups, including feeding them and protecting them from predators.

Pups are weaned at around 6-8 weeks old, and they reach sexual maturity at around 12-18 months old.

The average litter size for African wild dogs is 10-12 pups. Unfortunately, only about half of the pups in a litter survive to adulthood. This is due to a number of factors, including predation, disease, and starvation.

We look forward to giving updates on social media on this den and we hope that these pups survive and grow into young adults so that the numbers of these incredible special animals in the wild can keep on increasing.
