Verreaux’s Eagle-owl
November 5, 2022
Verreaux’s Eagle-owl, previously known as the Giant Eagle Owl is true to its name, being the largest owl in Africa.
This owl is easily recognised by its huge size and wingspan. They are light grey in colour, and the face is pale. They have distinctive pink eyelids as seen in the photo, which makes them easily identifiable. They have huge powerful feet and talons.
We have been fortunate the last couple of weeks to have had this beautiful owl resident in camp, tucked away between the foliage of a big Jackalberry tree during the day, calling every now and then. Its call is an unmistakable sequence of initial deep single nasal like “woks” followed by a number of these strung together.
